Scallops are the most renowned of all bivalve seashells. These shells are shaped like an Asian silk fan.
Scallops have been used for food and have had ties to religion for thousands of years. The Roman goddess, Venus came from a scallop shell, and visitors to the grave of St. James in Compostela, Spain were given scallop shells as a symbol of fulfillment of their pilgrimage. Scallops found on English family crests represent the fact that their forefathers made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
